A member of the mint family, Catnip is native to Europe and Asia. It's name, Nepeta, is said to come from the ancient city of Nepete, where the herb once grew in abundance. The ancient Romans valued it for its traditional herbal uses, the Greeks likewise incorporated it into their herbal medicine and in ancient Egypt it held a sacred connection to Bastet, the cat headed goddess of home and protection. Across these traditions, Catnip has long been believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.
