Calendula

A member of the Asteraceae family, Calendula takes its name from the Latin calendae, the first day of each month in the Roman calendar, a nod to its long, near continuous blooming season. The flower it also heliotropic, opening its petals at dawn and closing them at dusk as it tracks the sun across the sky, which is part of why it has long been tied to solar energy. Calendula has a rich history of use across ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and India, where it was valued for its bright colour and association with vitality and the sun.
