Native to Europe, Blue Cornflower once grew wild in cornfields, giving the plant its common name. Its botanical name, Centaurea cyanus, honours the Greek centaur Chiron, a healer renowned for his knowledge of plants, who was said to have used cornflowers to treat a poisoned would suffer by his student, Achilles.
The flower's history stretches back even further. Reproductions of cornflowers have been found dating to the Stone and Bronze Age in ancient Egypt and archaeologist Howard Carter discovered wreaths and garlands made of cornflowers in the tomb of King Tutankhamun. Because cornflowers bloom in March & April, their presence helped experts pinpoint the season of the king's burial, making them a lasting symbol of life and remembrance carried across thousands of years.
