Native to the Mediterranean and a member of the Asteraceae family, Blessed Thistle takes its name from two sources: Cnicus, from the Greek word for "to torment", referring to the plant's thorns, and benedictus, meaning "blessed", thought to refer to the Benedictine monks who grew the plant in monastery gardens to treat patients with the bubonic plague.
