Ashwagandha, Withania somnifera, has been used for over 3,000 years in Ayurvedic medicine, where it's valued as a calming adaptogen. It's name comes from the Sanskrit for "smell of the horse", referring to the scent of its root. Now it's species name, somnifera, means "sleep inducing" in Latin. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe it as Balya (strength-giving), a reputation echoed in its traditional use to soothe unease, encourage restorative sleep and bolster vitality and clarity of mind.
